Experience Japan Pictograms is a culture-specific, localised set of pictograms with the concept of “a second encounter with Japan”. Distributed for free online during COVID restrictions in support of Japanese tourism, it is a celebration of wayfinding’s power as visual infrastracture. Simple, comprehensive visual communication acts as interface to invite curiosity into deeper nuances of the unique culture.
Through a system of joints and skeletons versatile and natural enough to afford the diverse and dynamic movements of the pictogram system, I created an animation language that both introduced and expanded the pictogram system.
