Mikimoto is the first jeweler to invent the cultured pearl. For its 125th anniversary, we developed the concept of Kizen-no-Shiro — ‘pre-emergent white’ or ‘white in anticipation’. Kizen is a Shinto belief in a pre-nascent chaos, purer than any earthly being. This term originates circa 13th century in the Ise peninsula: the sacred abode of our sun goddess, the birthplace of Mikimoto pearls.
Kizen-no-shiro is joy on the brink of overflow—a budding seed, the fourteenth moon, the tremor of brimming water. It is the additive sum of the pearlescence spectrum. It is an imagined brightness that the gift of a pearl extends our perception towards. It is every felicity we will the pearl to don our beloved, in the instant they lift the lid.
The logo was designed with the supervision of Akira Kobayashi from Monotype. In addition, we worked on the shimmering wave texture of the packaging and storefront, as well as the entire packaging line-up, consisting of 12 boxes, 20+ pieces of gift wrapping, 30+ types of documents.
